As an IAB Europe-certified consent management platform, learn how Fides CMP enables publishers and advertisers to comply with European industry privacy standards, like TCF v2.2.
Las year, Ethyca passed the certification for the Interactive Advertising Bureau in Europe’s (IAB Europe) latest version of the Transparency & Consent Framework (TCF) v2.2.
With this certification, publishers and advertisers collecting and processing European consumers’ personal data can confidently comply with European consent requirements using the Fides Consent Management Platform (CMP).
In this blog post, we’ll demonstrate how Fides CMP enables compliance with the evolving privacy standards of Europe’s publishing industry.
The Transparency & Consent Framework (TCF) v2.2 is an accountability framework that standardizes compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the ePrivacy Directive for publishers and advertisers processing European consumers’ personal data.
Originally launched in 2018, the Framework has evolved over the years to meet the changing needs of users, markets, and regulators. TCF v2.2 is the framework’s latest version, which came out earlier this year on May 18, 2023.
Under TCF v2.2, publishing and advertising agencies must standardize the way they collect, process, and disclose consumers’ consent preferences, as well as how these consent options are displayed to consumers.
Let’s examine how Fides CMP enables publishers and advertisers to comply with TCF v2.2, and enhance European consumers’ control over their personal data.
As a publisher who has purchased TCF support in Fides CMP, you’ll have access to Fides Compass, Ethyca’s privacy intelligence dictionary.
Fides Compass contains all vendors from the TCF Global Vendor List (GVL) and is updated weekly to ensure that you can support all of the advertising partners that comply with TCF.
In addition to TCF vendors, Fides Compass also allows you to select vendors from Google’s Ad Technology Providers list that are not yet registered with TCF. Fides will automatically set an additional consent (AC) string and include it with the CMP API so that Google Ad Manager can enforce consent with these vendors.
In order to start collecting consent using TCF, select your known ad-tech vendors from the Vendors screen in Fides.
You can add vendors in bulk by selecting more than one vendor at a time, and clicking Add.
Once you’ve added your vendors, you can review them and inspect their purposes, data categories, and features by clicking on a row in the table.
You can return to this screen to add more vendors at any time.
Much of the text related to TCF is mandated by the framework and cannot be changed. However you can edit the title of the banner, the button text, and the description.
Once you’ve added your vendors, you can view your CMP UI to see how they are represented to your readers in Europe. Access your site from the EEA or via a VPN, and the Fides CMP will appear. The Fides CMP adheres to a layered consent approach. Users can see a summary in layer 1
In layer 2, users can read more detailed breakdowns of the purposes, features, and vendors.
There you have it! With Fides, your site can run with a TCF compliant CMP. Ad servers that are subject to TCF will make calls to the CMP API, check users’ consent preferences, and serve the appropriate ads.
As industry and regulatory standards constantly evolve, you can look to Ethyca for scaling your organization’s advertising-supported services, while adhering to European privacy regulations at the same time.
